Nenene Sumiregawa is a Japanese novelist stuck with writer's block since her longtime friend Yomiko Readman vanished. Her life shifts when she meets three sisters from Hong Kong, Anita, Maggie and Michelle, who can control paper and run a detective agency devoted to cases involving books. Hired as her local guides, they rescue her from terrorists at a book signing and stay on as her bodyguards. Book lovers Maggie and Michelle adore Nenene's novels, while young Anita cannot stand reading despite her powers. Guarding Nenene in Japan while taking jobs from a mysterious organization called Dokusensha, the sisters start to see a link between Nenene, Yomiko's disappearance and the strange books they are sent to investigate. The bond the four form is tested as they travel the world against evil forces bent on seizing control, led by a mastermind named Mr. Carpenter. The result mixes action, drama, mystery and science fiction.
