Subaru has already paid in blood to save everyone. Season 2 makes him pay in something worse: watching them forget he ever tried. The show doesn't give you catharsis for surviving loops anymore. It gives you Rem's complete erasure from existence, and makes you watch Subaru carry that alone while everyone else moves forward. That's where the real damage lives, not in the dying, but in the cost nobody else will ever know about.

Subaru thought the worst was behind him. He has beaten the White Whale. He has defeated the Witch Cult's Sin Archbishop of Sloth. He has reunited with Emilia after dying again and again to reach her. But victory turns hollow when he learns that Rem has been wiped from the world: two new Sin Archbishops, Gluttony and Greed, have devoured her memories and even her name, so that almost everyone has forgotten her. Now Subaru faces a different kind of nightmare, one where restarting time won't help, because his return point has already moved past the moment he would need to change. Returning to the ravaged village of Irlam, he sinks into despair, then heads with Emilia's group to the Sanctuary in search of answers. There he meets Echidna, the Witch of Greed, while mysterious new threats close in on the people trapped inside.
