Dir en grey doesn't need visuals to wreck you, but Keita Kurosaka gives them anyway. The animation moves like the song breathes, hand-drawn and deliberate, each frame a held note instead of a scream. This is what restraint looks like in a band known for excess, and it's somehow heavier for the quiet.

Rinkaku is a hand-drawn music video for the single of the same name by Japanese rock band Dir en Grey, released on December 19, 2012. The single marked the band's return after a hiatus of about a year and a half, which followed their eighth album, DUM SPIRO SPERO, and a heavy touring schedule at home and overseas. Animator Keita Kurosaka created the video, returning to work with the band after the notorious Agitated Screams of Maggots. In many ways this piece is far less shocking and grotesque than that earlier work, while still carrying a horror label.
