A Buddhist monk named Xuanzang sets out on a sacred mission to retrieve the Mahayana scriptures from western India. Along the way, he helps Sun Wukong, who was sealed inside a large rock by Guanyin as punishment for his mischief, and Sun Wukong becomes his pupil. When a pig monster attacks a girl, Sun Wukong punishes him, and the pig joins the group as the disciple Zhu Bajie. A kappa, a water imp, is given the name Sha Wujing and becomes a pupil too. The travelers face monsters as they push toward their destination, and Sun Wukong's actions reveal a snowy holy mountain where the scriptures are kept. There, Xuanzang asks the Buddha to grant him the sacred texts. A short adventure film adapted from the classic novel Journey to the West.
