A 14-year-old delinquent who skips school and fights constantly surprises everyone when he dives in front of a moving car to rescue a young boy. The act is so unlike Yusuke Urameshi that the spirit realm has no place ready for him, so he lingers as a ghost. Koenma, heir to the spirit realm's throne and acting ruler while his father King Enma is away, gives him a way back to life by carrying out a series of tasks. Guided by the death god Botan, Yusuke becomes a Spirit Detective charged with stopping demons who steal dangerous objects or prey on people. His former rival Kazuma Kuwabara joins him, along with Hiei and Kurama, two demons with criminal pasts. Together the group trains and fights enemies whose defeat decides the fate of humanity, in a supernatural action adventure with plenty of comedy.
