This one grabs you in the first five minutes with a B-movie action opening that has no interest in easing you in, then spends the rest of its two episodes cashing that check with mixed results. Shinjuro is the joke the show is in on: a kid handed a swordsmanship school he never asked for, visibly out of his depth, wimpy in every conversation, and then absolutely lethal the second steel comes out. The Tokugawa house calling in its favor is the good kind of cruel, because it turns a town-defense job into a duel with Mikage that Shinjuro has no business wanting. Yes, the plot is feudal-era boilerplate you have seen a dozen times, and it never pretends otherwise. But it moves, it commits to its fights, and it is over before it can bore you. Late-night samurai comfort food for people who collect the deep cuts.
