Seven criminals get one shot at redemption before they hang. The Shinsengumi's decimated, the Masked Demons are still out there, and Ichibanboshi has to lead a crew of people who have zero reason to trust him or each other. The show leans into that friction hard, you're watching misfits claw toward honor they're not sure they deserve, against enemies they can't even see coming. It's less "bad guys become good" and more "what happens when the only people left standing are the ones nobody wanted anyway." The final fight matters because these seven have nothing but each other.
The Masked Demons have nearly wiped out the Shinsengumi, Kyoto's peacekeeping force, leaving only one survivor, Heisuke Toudou. Pressed to rebuild the unit, he offers convicts a chance to redeem themselves by giving up their old names and standing in for the fallen captains, and seven end up taking the role. Leading this unlikely squad is Ichibanboshi, whose parents were killed by the Masked Demons. Now he serves as the replacement for Commander Isami Kondo, and he joins the other substitutes in going after the Masked Demons to avenge his family. His impulsive streak and lack of discipline make Toudou's plan hard to hold together. Meanwhile, rival factions such as Kogorou Katsura's group begin moving to seize power as the Edo period draws to a close. Expect a fantasy action series built around former criminals trying to restore order.
