Taisei Oonari, a second-year junior high student, transfers to Shinkai Gakuen Middle School hoping to find clues about his older sister, who vanished two years ago. Soon after, the Unknown, a mysterious enemy that first struck long ago, appears again for the first time in ten years. To counter it, the Evolutionary Railway Development Agency, known as ERDA, has built Shinkalion robots that transform into bullet trains. Taisei turns out to have a high aptitude score as a pilot and must decide whether to fight. Questions about what the Unknown really is and what it wants hang over the battles. The result is a mecha action series about boys finding resolve and growing up, driven by Taisei's wish to become someone cool enough to protect what matters.
