Gainax's debut is pure creative chaos, three idiots dropped into a hallucinogenic fever dream that shifts art styles like channel flipping through someone else's nightmares. The narrative doesn't cohere because it's not supposed to. You're watching a studio that will eventually build Evangelion learning how to break every rule at once, and the mess is the whole point.

Manbo, Chinbo and Chonbo are thrown into a bizarre, trippy realm of lunacy that makes no sense to them. Once there, the three stir up havoc with wild, erratic behavior. The one-episode OVA from 1985 is a musical comedy adapted from a manga by Fujiwara Kamui that ran in Monthly Super Action, and it took some inspiration from Jamie Uys's film The Gods Must Be Crazy. Under the silliness sits a satirical, comic look at one culture pressing itself onto others. It was also the first professional production from the studio Gainax.
