A yakuza boss pretending to be a math teacher is the setup, but the actual show is about a woman who gives a damn about kids everyone else wrote off, and means it. Yankumi doesn't fix her delinquents with a secret power or a magic lesson plan, she just shows up as herself, mess and all, and they notice. Thirteen episodes is criminally short for how much you'll miss this cast when it ends.
Kumiko Yamaguchi arrives at Shirokin High School with a simple dream: teach mathematics and inspire students. Instead, she gets assigned to class 2-4, a classroom full of juvenile delinquents and troublemakers who see her as their next target. They try everything to shake her, expecting an easy pushover. What they don't realize is that Kumiko carries a secret far bigger than any lesson plan. She is the heir to the Oedo Group, a powerful yakuza clan, and her upbringing has given her the strength to overpower hardened gangsters in moments. Keeping that background hidden is the price of keeping her job, and the pressure comes from several sides at once. The vice principal keeps looking for a reason to fire her, and Shin Sawada, the leader of her class, suspects she is tougher than she lets on. Through it all, Kumiko works to teach her students about life as well as academics, earning their respect in this comedy drama about a dedicated teacher with a very unusual family.
