A son fishing to honor his father pulls up something that should have stayed buried. The demon that emerges doesn't want to destroy him, it wants to teach him that obedience is a trap, that loyalty without thought is just another kind of slavery. This is a 1950s educational film that argues against everything education was supposed to stand for, and it does it through a genie that rewrites the Arabian Nights into something colder and more true.

A devoted son skips play and fishes every day to make his father happy. One day his net brings up a pot, and when he opens it a demon comes out. The story draws mainly on the Arabian Nights tale of the fisherman and the genie, with Machiavelli's fable of the lion and the fox from The Prince woven in. Directed by Sanae Yamamoto and produced by Yamamoto Manga Seisakusho, the studio Yamamoto founded, the fantasy film was the first animated work commissioned by the Ministry of Education. It pairs finely drawn backgrounds and characters with experiments such as speech balloons carrying cut-out lettering for the dialogue.
