This film moves quietly through a man's life and never asks you to cry, but you will anyway. Jirou Horikoshi arrives in Tokyo with a singular dream: to design aircraft like those of his hero, the Italian pioneer Giovanni Battista Caproni. His poor eyesight bars him from ever piloting a plane himself, but that doesn't stop him from studying aeronautical engineering at Tokyo Imperial University. His arrival coincides with the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, and in the chaos he rescues a maid who serves the family of a young girl named Naoko Satomi. The disaster opens two decades of unrest that lead to Japan's surrender in World War II. As years pass, Jirou dedicates himself to his craft, working toward the Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter, while coming to see both the role his planes play in the war and the hard truths of his personal life. The film is a drama with romance at its core, asking what price he will pay to chase his dream.
