A boy who deserves punishment gets it, then spends a year learning why cruelty matters by becoming small enough to be crushed by it. Every step north costs him something, comfort, certainty, the right to be selfish, until the person he becomes is unrecognizable from the person he was. Nils doesn't break the spell by finding Lapland. He breaks it by becoming someone the spell no longer fits.
SYNOPSIS
Nils Holgersson is a selfish, troublemaking boy who torments everyone around him: his exhausted parents, the farm animals, and even a mysterious little creature called a tomte. When he captures the tomte out of spite, the magical being shrinks him down to miniature size as punishment. Now Nils can only reverse the curse by traveling across Sweden to distant Lapland, an impossible journey he'll have to make riding on the back of Morten, his family's goose, alongside a brave hamster named Carrot and a wild flock of geese led by the no-nonsense Captain Akka. The road north is dangerous and strange. Nils encounters vengeful witches, animated statues, cunning foxes, and ravens with ancient wisdom. But something unexpected happens as he flies farther from home: surrounded by creatures who depend on him and landscapes that fill him with wonder, Nils begins to change. He discovers compassion he never knew he possessed. Yet when the moment finally arrives to break the spell and return to his human life, Nils faces an agonizing choice between two worlds that have both claimed his heart.
