Marco is a young boy living in Genoa, Italy, with his father Pietro. About a year earlier his mother left for Argentina to find work. Her letters arrived regularly until they abruptly stopped. Overcome with worry about what might have happened to her, Marco resolves to travel to Argentina in the hope of finding her again. Pietro opposes the plan at first, but his son's eagerness moves him, and he finally lets the boy go. Along the way Marco meets many people, and his experiences help him grow in maturity and come to accept himself. The story is a 52-episode adventure drama adapted from a short section of Edmondo de Amicis's novel Cuore.
