Romeo is an 11-year-old boy living with his poor family in a small Swiss village in the Alps. When his father falls ill and needs a doctor, Romeo sells himself to Luini, a man who buys children and sells them as chimney sweeps in Milan. On the road he befriends Alfredo, and the two swear to meet again after they are sold to different masters. In Milan, Romeo endures hard work and abuse from his master's family and from a gang called the Wolf Pack. After he reunites with Alfredo, the chimney sweeps band together as the Black Brothers and learn to stand up for one another. The story is an adventure drama adapted from Lisa Tetzner's novel Die Schwarzen Brüder.
