A friendless kid and a delinquent discover jazz in 1966 and suddenly the loneliness breaks open. Watching them learn an instrument together, argue about records, chase girls, fail at things that matter, this is what it actually feels like to find your person. In the early summer of 1966, high school freshman Kaoru Nishimi moves alone from Yokosuka to a seaside town in Kyushu to live with relatives because of his father's work. An introverted classical pianist and honor student who has changed schools constantly, he expects another lonely year, until he meets Sentaro Kawabuchi, a notorious delinquent with a deep love of jazz. Through Sentaro, Kaoru takes up the genre, makes his first real friend and learns the joy of playing with someone else at jam sessions held beneath the record shop run by the family of Ritsuko, Sentaro's kind childhood friend. The mysterious upperclassman Yurika and the admired Brother Jun also cross their paths. Set in a town touched by American culture, the story is a music drama about growing up, friendship and first love.
