A bored kid saves a dog and accidentally stumbles into the only thing that makes him feel alive. The band isn't magical, they're awkward, broke, and constantly fighting over what they're supposed to sound like. But watching four teenagers teach themselves to want something badly enough to fail publicly, then try again anyway, hits harder than any underdog story that doesn't let you hear them actually play.

Fourteen-year-old Koyuki drifts through life without goals, feeling disconnected from everything around him. Everything changes when he rescues an odd-looking dog named Beck from a group of local kids and meets its owner, Ryuusuke, a sixteen-year-old guitarist who once played in a popular rock band. Dazzled by Ryuusuke's playing and drawn to the glamour of western rock, Koyuki picks up the guitar himself. With Ryuusuke's younger sister Maho and a few other members, the two boys form a band called BECK and chase Ryuusuke's dream of building the ultimate rock group. Mixing comedy, drama and slice-of-life moments, the story follows the band's struggles and successes as its reputation spreads across Japan.
