Anime Like This Boy Caught a Merman
A boy drowns chasing his grandfather's ghost into the ocean and wakes up face-to-face with the only person who could possibly understand what it means to not belong on solid ground. The romance that follows isn't about conquering difference, it's about recognizing yourself in someone else's strangeness. Shima doesn't save the merman or get saved by him; they just stop being alone in the wrong world at the same time.
SYNOPSIS
Shima chases a photograph of his late grandfather into the ocean and nearly drowns in the attempt. A mysterious figure pulls him from the water, and when Shima opens his eyes, he finds himself face to face with Isaki: a merman with the upper body of a human and everything else decidedly not. For someone who's always felt out of place in his own world, the encounter feels less like chance and more like fate. As they spend time together, an unexpected connection forms between them, one neither boy anticipated or knows how to navigate. But romance between a human and a creature from an entirely different world comes with complications that go far beyond cultural differences or family disapproval. Their relationship exists in an impossible space: two beings from incompatible worlds discovering that love doesn't follow the same logical rules as biology. What begins as a rescue becomes something far more tender and far more fragile.
