Three seasons in and it still feels illegal that the most cunning wuxia scripting on television is being performed by hand-carved Taiwanese glove puppets. Urobuchi writes these characters like chess pieces that know they're on a board, and Lin Xue Ya, the Screaming Phoenix Killer, is still the reason you rewatch scenes to catch which lie he planted six episodes earlier. Shang Bu Huan remains the tired man who only took an umbrella from a Buddha statue and got a whole continent of sword-hunting fanatics as change. The budaixi craft is the flex: real silk sleeves whipping through practical pyrotechnics, puppeteers selling a sword draw with a wrist flick, Sawano's score swelling like it's scoring a mecha war. Season three is where the debts from Sword Travels in the East and Lang Wu Yao's ruined voice come due. Nobody in this story gets a clean exit, and everyone deserves that.
