The comedy between Ryuuji and Taiga is so sharp and natural that you forget you're watching a romance anime until it suddenly breaks your heart. Every joke lands because these two actually feel like people, not archetypes, awkward and defensive and capable of stunning tenderness in the same breath. The show front-loads the laughs hard enough that when it pivots to actually meaning something in the second half, you're already too invested to look away. It doesn't reinvent the high school romance formula, but it executes it with enough genuine affection for its characters that the ending hits exactly as hard as the opening made you believe it would.

Ryuuji Takasu looks like a delinquent, but he isn't one. Starting his second year of high school, he is a gentle boy with a real talent for housework, yet his intimidating face scares off classmates and leaves him with few friends. Taiga Aisaka is small and doll-like, but she is known around school as the Palmtop Tiger, snapping at people and carrying a wooden katana. After a string of misunderstandings, Taiga makes Ryuuji her personal servant, and he ends up doing the chores in the apartment where she lives alone. The two learn that each has a crush on the other's best friend: Taiga likes Yuusaku Kitamura, and Ryuuji likes Minori Kushieda. They agree to help each other win them over, and as Taiga spends more and more time at Ryuuji's home, classmates grow curious and rumors start to spread. The show is a romantic comedy with drama and slice of life elements.
