A 65-year-old widow returns to a movie theater after years away, recalling how she and her late husband used to watch films together. There she encounters Kai, a young film student whose unconventional passion mirrors her own: both find themselves more captivated by how audiences react to cinema than by the films themselves. Kai believes Umiko shares his wish to see how people respond to something they made, and he challenges her to spend the rest of her life chasing that feeling. To her own surprise, Umiko enrolls in the same film school, where she is drawn into the lives of much younger classmates she struggles to understand. The film mixes comedy and drama as it asks what to do with the years ahead, and whether wisdom comes from age or from observation.
