Zero's obsession becomes the show's obsession. His visions splinter his loyalty to Yuuki, and every episode forces him to choose between what he wants to believe and what he's starting to know about himself. The real enemy isn't the vampires, it's the person Zero is becoming, and Yuuki watching it happen is what actually breaks your heart.

Zero returns to the academy after vanishing, leaving Yuuki torn between relief and doubt about what happened during their separation. Visions that began when he drank Kaname's blood trouble him, driving him to seek answers from the awakened Maria Kurenai. Her cryptic reply hints at who the real enemy might be. Meanwhile, the Supreme Vampire Council arrives at the school intending to execute Zero for killing a pureblood. Kaname steps in, both to save Zero and for reasons of his own that no one else knows. Yuuki, haunted by ghastly hallucinations, wants to recover her lost memories and turns to Kaname for the truth about her hidden past.
