Oko and Seiji, an older sister and younger brother, run Izumoya, a rental shop in the Fukagawa ward of old Edo. Fire and flooding strike so often there that residents rent everyday goods like pots, futons and clothing rather than buying things that would slow them down when they flee. Mixed into the shop's stock are tsukumogami, objects that have become spirits after a century or more of existence. The siblings can see and talk with them, and word of the pair draws still more spirits to the store. The tsukumogami overhear conversations around town and pass them on as gossip, and the siblings use the spirits' powers to resolve the quarrels that arise.
