A girl who's better at everything than you, smarter than you, and completely aware of it, and you're the one chasing her across the shogi board anyway. Ayumu doesn't win through grand gestures; he wins by showing up, losing repeatedly, and somehow making that the most romantic thing about him. The show knows its formula is simple and runs it until simple becomes perfect.

Ayumu Tanaka, a kendo champion in middle school, starts high school by skipping the Kendo Club and joining the unofficial Shogi Club instead, all because he has fallen for its president and sole member, Urushi Yaotome, at first sight. Rather than confess right away, he vows not to tell her how he feels until he can beat her at shogi fairly. That is a tall order, since Urushi has far more experience and reads every strategy he tries. Ayumu still compliments her looks, her skill and her smile with a blank face and total directness, leaving her flustered and red. His feelings are no secret to Urushi, and she keeps scheming to get him to break his vow. Match by match, as he learns the game and learns more about her, Ayumu edges a little closer to confessing. A gentle romantic comedy with a slice of life feel, set largely across the shogi board.
