Eiji isn't just piloting a robot. He's caught between two worlds trying to kill each other, and the machine in his hands is the only thing keeping either side from winning. The show builds that tension across 38 episodes without ever letting you settle into "which side is right", because they're both right, and both wrong, and Eiji knows it. The 1985 animation moves like it's running out of time, all kinetic urgency and real stakes that don't reset episode to episode.
Blue Comet SPT Layzner is a 38-episode 1985 mecha series that mixes action, adventure and science fiction. In an alternate 1996, humanity has bases on the Moon and Mars, while the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union has spread into space. On Mars, a United Nations exchange group called the Cosmic Culture Club is caught in a clash between four humanoid robots known as Super Powered Tracers. Their base is destroyed and only six members survive, stranded on a hostile world. The pilot of the remaining machine, Eiji, the son of an Earth man and an alien, tells them that Earth is in danger from the distant Grados Empire. With his new friends, Eiji uses the powerful SPT Layzner to defend his father's planet against his mother's and to fight for peace.
