You're watching a man ride a motorcycle-mecha across a dead Earth because it's the only way to find his girlfriend before the aliens kill everyone he has left. The plot sounds thin until episode three, when you realize the show is actually about what survives in you after the world ends. It commits to that idea harder than it has any right to, and that commitment is exactly what splits the audience down the middle.

Earth falls under siege when the Inbit, an extraterrestrial race, arrives without warning in 2050. Humanity's defenses crumble, and the planet is left desolate. Survivors scatter in small pockets while others escape to shelter on the Moon. Years later, a liberation force from the Mars colony is all but wiped out, and lone survivor Stig Bernard ends up on Earth. Gathering a small band of resistance fighters, he heads north toward Reflex Point, the alien base in the Great Lakes region of North America, hoping to learn how the invaders might be beaten. Along the way, the group's members grow into close friends, almost a family.
