// WHY IT HITS

A kid on a motorcycle stumbles into a government secret, and by the time he realizes what it means, the ground beneath the entire city dissolves. Noboru Ishiguro's direction in Part 1 builds dread through neon and speed, letting you feel Shogo's confusion before you understand it, you're lost in a cybercity designed to keep you lost. The animation itself is the storytelling: every frame of transformation, every reflection in chrome and glass, every impossible geometry of the setting works to convince you that nothing you're seeing is real. This is sci-fi that knows the difference between explaining a concept and making you feel the vertigo of discovering reality was a lie. It inspired everything you think of as cyberpunk anime, and it did it first, in 1985, when most shows were still figuring out what a motorcycle could be.

SYNOPSIS

Shogo's world explodes the moment he steals a government motorcycle. What he thinks is a simple joyride becomes a desperate game of survival when black-ops agents close in from every direction. His only play is to broadcast the bike's existence to the world, force the government's hand, and hide in plain sight on live television. That's where Eve comes in: a charming pop idol with her own reasons for helping him, though her motivations run far deeper than she lets on. As Shogo races through the city on his mechanical prize, he starts piecing together fragments of a much larger truth. The bike transforms in ways that shouldn't be possible. Eve knows things she shouldn't know. The government's desperation feels personal, not bureaucratic. Each answer he finds only multiplies the questions until one terrible realization hits: everything he's ever believed about his reality might be a lie. What begins as a high-octane chase becomes a headlong sprint toward a truth that rewrites existence itself. By the finale, survival means something entirely different than it did when this started.
