Humanity drifts through the void aboard colossal seed ships, refugees from a cataclysm that obliterated the solar system a thousand years ago. The Gauna, alien entities with no known way of communicating, pursue these survivors across space. On the Sidonia, one of these ships, a young man named Nagate Tanikaze emerges from a lifetime spent deep within the ship's lower levels. He enters training to pilot the Gardes, massive robotic weapons built to fight the Gauna. Nagate is given the controls of the Tsugumori, a legendary unit. When the Gauna attack, he stands with his comrades and friends Shizuka Hoshijiro, Izana Shinatose and Yuhata Midorikawa to defend the ship against their alien enemy. In the cold darkness between stars, every pilot risks their life for the survival of humanity.
