The premise hits before anything else: you're yanked from a video game into the actual game, and the rules are already written in blood. Ryouta has to survive using bombs as his only weapon, but the real threat isn't the island, it's everyone else who woke up here with the same crystal in their hand and nothing to lose. The early episodes move so fast you don't have time to notice the protagonist getting progressively dumber the longer the series goes, which is a problem the show never solves, but by then you're too invested in the death game itself to stop watching.

Ryouta Sakamoto, an unemployed young man who lives with his mother and ranks among the best players of the online combat game Btooom!, wakes up on a remote tropical island with no memory of how he got there. His only clues are a strange crystal embedded in his hand, a bag of bombs, and the sudden realization that he's living out his favorite video game in brutal reality. Other players are scattered across the island, armed and dangerous, all trapped in some kind of twisted tournament where the stakes are permanent. Death here means actual death, not a game over screen. The catch: Ryouta is actually good at Btooom. But mastery in a controlled digital space doesn't automatically translate to survival when real people are trying to murder you. The only way home is to kill seven other players and claim their crystals, and although Ryouta starts out rejecting violence, hostile rivals soon force him to fight. Joining up with Himiko, another Btooom! player, he tries to escape the island while edging closer to the truth behind the deadly contest.
