The murders happen because the game demands them, not because anyone wants to kill. Monokuma doesn't just trap you in a school, he rewires every reason you have to survive into a reason to betray. Makoto Naegi, a teenager with no special talent, is thrilled to be accepted into Hope's Peak Private Academy, an elite school whose graduates are said to be set for success. After passing out inside, he wakes in an empty classroom and finds his fellow freshmen, fifteen gifted students in all, gathered in the gym. Their principal, a robotic teddy bear named Monokuma, tells them they are locked in. The only way out is to kill a classmate and not be found out. If the others identify the killer, only the killer is executed. If they fail, the killer graduates and everyone else is wiped out. Refusing means spending the rest of their lives inside the school. The result is a horror mystery thriller built on suspicion, with every student both a potential victim and a potential killer.
