The killing game format becomes a weapon against the people who survived the last one, designed specifically to break them in ways they can't defend against. Every death hits different because you know these characters, have watched them grow, and the show doesn't flinch from making their endings count for something dark and permanent. It's messy and the animation budgets show, but the emotional devastation it builds is the entire point.

Makoto Naegi has become the Ultimate Hope, the one who defeated the Ultimate Despair, Junko Enoshima. Now he stands accused of treason against the Future Foundation for sheltering the Remnants of Despair. When the Foundation's leadership convenes to judge him, Monokuma breaks through their security, locks them all away and declares a new killing game. There are no class trials this time: a single traitor among the sixteen participants will kill them in their sleep, and breaking a personal forbidden action means death by poison. Former classmates Kyoko, Aoi and Hagakure are among those trapped. With no one able to trust anyone else, Makoto must once again unravel the mystery as his ideals of hope are pushed to the limit.
