A third-grader trying to draw a song, a stranger's sketches at a train station, two art contests running parallel. The simplicity is the point. Masaaki Yuasa animates the music segments like he's translating feeling directly into movement, and the rest of the film breathes with the kind of quiet warmth that makes you want to sit with it again immediately. Third grader Momoko Sakura gets an assignment from her teacher: draw a picture inspired by a favorite song and enter it in a contest. She picks a tune she just learned in music class and badly wants her drawing to turn out well. While traveling to visit relatives in Shizuoka, she meets Shouko Kimura, a university student who sometimes draws portraits at the local train station and is preparing an entry for an art contest of her own. Captivated by Shouko's pictures, Momoko seeks her out again, and Shouko is charmed by the girl's warmth and candor. Their shared love of drawing turns them into fast friends, and each ends up inspiring the other in her own way. A gentle slice-of-life comedy film.
