A whale falls in love with a submarine during wartime. The absurdity dissolves instantly into something that breaks you. This is a children's film that treats grief and impossible connection with the stillness of someone who understands loss, not someone explaining it to you.

A very large whale falls in love with a small submarine in this 2004 television special, a drama from Shin-Ei. The story is the third entry in Sensou Douwa, the studio's yearly series of anime films for young audiences set around the Second World War, so this unusual love story belongs to a wartime tale made for children.
