A shinigami filing paperwork in the worst division of the afterlife sounds like a joke setup, but the show treats it like the only honest thing on TV. Tsuzuki and Hisoka's partnership crackles with friction that never resolves into comfort, and that's the entire point. The opening theme alone will lodge itself in your brain for twenty years.
Tsuzuki Asato is a cheerful, goofy shinigami whose job is making sure the dead stay dead and remain in the realms where they belong. He has done the work for more than seventy years, yet he is stuck in the lowest division with miserable pay. Shinigami operate in pairs, and Tsuzuki has never managed to hold on to a partner until he is teamed with Kurosaki Hisoka, a stubborn, sharp-tongued, guarded sixteen-year-old. Every case they take brings them nearer to the schemes of Dr. Muraki Kazutaka, a serial killer, and the bond between the two partners grows closer. Tsuzuki cannot find peace, though, because of the dark circumstances of his own death. The series mixes drama, fantasy and horror across thirteen episodes.
