The comedy lives in the puns and wordplay, not the premise, a guy joins the wrong club is just permission for the show to wall itself in with otaku references and slapstick timing that actually lands. Noya Itsuki transfers to Ebisugawa High School and, drawn by a lifelong love of space, sets out to join the Astronomy Club. Instead, he wanders into the Asstronomy Club, a basement hangout whose members are all female otaku, led by the barely grounded Todayama Kyouko. Itsuki can tell the girls are strange, yet he still believes he has joined a club about the stars. Around him are a boys love manga fanatic who keeps ending up in her underwear, a maid with a secret mission, a rival set on getting the club shut down, and a cat serving as faculty adviser. The result is an ecchi comedy packed with anime parodies, where the line between reality and fantasy keeps breaking and his school life turns very odd, very fast.
