Makoto stumbles into a world that wants to kill him, immediately, and spends the series being the only person competent enough to survive it by accident. The show treats comedy and genuine danger as the same thing, never separating them. Watch a kid realize that his only advantage is being too stubborn to die, surrounded by people who would follow him anyway.

When Makoto Mizuhara's school science experiment is sabotaged by his longtime rival, student council president Katsuhiko Jinnai, the overloaded device opens a portal. It throws Makoto, Jinnai, Jinnai's sister Nanami and their teacher Mr. Fujisawa into a strange world called El Hazard. Makoto and Fujisawa end up in the Kingdom of Roshtaria, where Princess Rune Venus welcomes them as guests and soon becomes Makoto's friend. Jinnai throws in his lot with the Bugrom, a race of giant insects intent on conquering El Hazard, while Nanami tries to make a living on her own in the desert. As Makoto looks for a way back to Earth, he must fend off the Bugrom, gain the help of the Holy Priestesses and keep the demon god Ifurita from destroying everything, in an adventure comedy full of misfits far from home.
