Angela Balzac is an agent on DEVA, a space station orbiting a devastated Earth, where most of humanity lives as digital minds in a virtual world free of death and hunger. When a skilled hacker called Frontier Setter breaks into the system and spreads subversive messages, Angela is charged with stopping him. Once his signal is traced to the planet below, her consciousness is moved into a clone body, she is given a mech, and she is sent down to meet Dingo, an agent living on Earth. Suddenly stuck with a body that needs food and rest, she travels with Dingo across the ruined frontier to uncover who the hacker is and what he wants, learning surprising truths about both the wasteland and the paradise above.
