False Memory doesn't explain itself, it detonates in your face and dares you to catch up. Guan Chao's hunt for the Burning Stone to fire the Time Gun collapses into something stranger the second he's swallowed by the Memory Administration Bureau, and from there it's not really about the BUG Beings he and Fang Tang and Bai Zhong clear out level by level, it's about what gets left behind in him after each dive. The aspect ratio actually shifts as the memory layers warp, which sounds like a gimmick until you're watching a panel literally cage a character's breakdown. Yeah, the plot mechanics are nonsense if you poke at them, the Time Gun stuff barely holds together, but nobody's here for the lore. They're here because by episode six you're not thinking about BUGs anymore, you're thinking about what Guan Chao is actually running from, and it lands harder on rewatch once you know what the Bureau really is.{
Guan Chao wants to go back to the past, and to do it he hunts for the Burning Stone, the power source needed to run the Time Gun. His search goes wrong when he ends up inside the Memory Administration Bureau. To get back to reality, he joins memory administrators including Fang Tang and Bai Zhong, clearing out BUG Beings one layer of memory at a time. As each fight ends, something deeper hidden within memory begins to stir. The seven-episode ONA mixes action, mystery and psychological elements.
