A young boy named John discovers a stray puppy among grazing sheep and brings her home to his small English mining town, naming her Lassie. The two become inseparable companions, and soon the entire community adores the clever, kindhearted dog. Their peaceful days end when the local coal mine shuts down because its coal has run out. When John asks the mine owner to look into the matter further, the man agrees on one condition: Lassie goes with him to Scotland. Priscilla, the owner's granddaughter and John's friend, can't bear watching Lassie suffer in a cage. She opens it and frees the dog, who sets off on a long, hard journey from Scotland back to her hometown and the boy she loves.
