Sakura's descent is already written into her bones, and this film finally stops pretending it can be stopped, it just animates the exact moment everything breaks. The action sequences don't exist to distract from the emotional carnage; they are the emotional carnage, ufotable treating every clash like a requiem. This is what happens when a studio decides the soundtrack and the animation and the character payoff all arrive at the same unbearable second, and you sit there watching a girl you've known for three films get everything she deserves and none of what she needs.

Shirou Emiya has vowed to protect Sakura Matou, but the Holy Grail War, a contest in which mages and their Heroic Spirits fight over a wish-granting vessel, has become badly twisted. Sakura, weighed down by her sins, is sinking into darkness while Zouken Matou uses her for his own ends. Together with Rin Tohsaka, Shirou throws himself into the fighting to end the war, as Illyasviel von Einzbern, one of the few who knows what truly lies behind the conflict, faces her own fate. A corrupting shadow has been rampaging through Fuyuki City, and the group must stand against an overwhelming enemy that includes former allies. As the final act begins, Shirou's ideals are tested by a painful question: can a world where everything has gone wrong still be saved? The third film concludes the trilogy adapting the visual novel's third route, blending action, psychological drama and supernatural thriller.
