A French Bulldog adopted from the Happy Kennel by a girl named Ai, and named Alex, gets separated from her when he mistakenly follows another girl dressed like Ai onto a bus. He takes the name Freddy, after the hero of a storybook Ai used to read him, and sets out to get back to her. First, though, Freddy and his new friends must find the Fortune Tree and keep it from dying. If it dies, all humans will lose their good will and stop caring about their pets. The result is a warm adventure about a dog's devotion to his owner and a quest with stakes for animals and people alike.
