Fuku-chan, a boy from one of Japan's best-loved newspaper comic strips of the era, lends his name to this action film. The story shows a submarine striking an enemy freighter, a plot meant to stir patriotic feeling in its audience. The film also has scenes in the submarine's galley, where the cooks turn a plentiful stock of vegetables, fruit, fish and rice into all kinds of dishes to a cheerful, bouncy tune. The film came out at a time of severe food shortages in Japan, when such foods were already luxuries, and young viewers took particular delight in those cooking scenes.
