You either get the joke or you don't: these girls are warships, and the show treats that fact with complete sincerity while also being completely ridiculous about it. The naval combat sequences actually respect the ship-girl concept enough to make the action feel like it matters, even when you're watching cute girls do impossible things in impossible outfits. If you've sunk time into the game, this hits like fan service that earns itself; if you haven't, you're watching a show that assumes you already care about characters you've never met, which means it collapses almost immediately.

Humanity has lost control of the oceans to a hostile force called the Abyssal Fleet. A special naval base is set up to fight back, and its weapons are the Kanmusu, girls who carry the spirits of Japanese warships and wear armed gear that lets them draw on that power. Fubuki, a young destroyer, arrives at the base as a new recruit. Though she is inexperienced and timid, she is placed in the renowned Third Torpedo Squadron and sent into combat almost at once. After being saved from near destruction, she decides to grow as strong as the one who rescued her. The show mixes action, science fiction and slice of life.
