A military black-ops operative trying to pass as a normal high school student is already a premise that writes comedy gold for one episode. Fumoffu takes that premise, throws out the dramatic spine of the franchise, and commits fully to the bit for twelve episodes straight. Sousuke's complete inability to read social situations collides with perfectly mundane school life in ways that feel both impossibly absurd and weirdly grounded. The show knows its job is to make you laugh at the gap between how seriously Sousuke takes everything and how little any of it actually matters. It never overexplains the joke or apologizes for the stupid. That's the entire appeal, and it works.

Sousuke Sagara is a sergeant with a soldier's instincts, not a normal teenager's. He is back at Jindai High School, assigned to guard Kaname Chidori, and he treats every threat, real or imagined, with military force, often showing up to class armed. Kaname, who serves as student council vice president and just wants a peaceful school life, spends her days trying to keep him under control. When Kaname lands in serious trouble, Sousuke puts on the costume of Bonta-kun, a well-known amusement park mascot, and turns it into a high-tech exoskeleton whose voice translator can only say "mofu." Sousuke must also look after his superior officer, Teletha Testarossa, who takes time off from Mithril and joins their class for a couple of weeks. The result is an action comedy with a touch of romance, built on the clash between a soldier's habits and ordinary school life.
