The crew of J9 takes jobs nobody else will because the solar system is too big and too broken for anyone to care. They're not heroes, they're mercenaries who solve problems by throwing their robot at them. That's the whole show, and it works because the 1981 energy is pure: messy, direct, no apologies for the premise.

The solar system in 2111 has been colonized, but its moons and planets have become lawless and the police can do little about it. To fight the evil spreading through the system, Isaac Godonov forms J9, a four-member team made up of himself, Jotaro Kido, Steven Bowie and Angel Omachi. With their robot Braiger, they accept the missions the police will not take, as long as the price is right. Meanwhile, the Nubia bloc on Earth schemes to destroy Jupiter and turn it into more than 30 smaller planets fit for colonization, a plan that would also mean the destruction of Earth. The result is mecha action set against a space adventure backdrop.
