You die on a random Tuesday and wake up in a room with strangers and a black sphere that says "start." The movie doesn't waste time explaining, it throws you into the mission immediately, all sleek CGI and bodies hitting pavement at terminal velocity. This is pure visual spectacle designed to make you feel the vertigo of sudden death and sudden purpose, and it commits completely to that feeling.

Masaru Katou, a brave and kind-hearted student, is stabbed to death on his way home to celebrate his younger brother's birthday. He wakes in a small room overlooking Tokyo, and he is not alone: rather than the afterlife, it is a waiting room for a deadly game run by a black ball called Gantz, where beating the game is the only way to live again. Before he can make sense of it, Masaru is given a gun and sent into the middle of Osaka with one order, to kill any alien he sees. Alongside the elderly Yoshikazu Suzuki, the idol Reika Shimohira and the cold, seasoned Jouichirou Nishi, he has to conquer his fear to survive and get back to the brother waiting for him. The film is a fully 3DCG sci-fi horror adaptation of the manga's Osaka arc.
