This is the franchise that never once treated otaku as a punchline it could safely stand outside of, and a single bundled OVA still lands harder than most full cours. You already know the bit: Ogiue introducing herself with "I'm Ogiue and I hate otaku" before becoming the most committed doujinshi artist in the room, Sasahara's circle learning that Comifes is a cruel master, Tanaka and Ohno inching toward something real between costume fittings. By volume 15 the clubroom belongs to a new generation, Ogiue running things and Hato complicating every assumption the old crew had about who gets to be in this hobby. Genshiken's trick was always the small stuff, the awkward silence after someone says the wrong thing, the way a shared bookshelf becomes a friendship. Bundled with a manga volume, made for people who already bought the manga. That's the whole audience, and it's the correct one.

The Genshiken crew returns for another slice of club life in this single comedy OVA. Sue flies in from the USA and ends up staying with Ogiue, where she shows keen interest in Ogiue's doujinshi and a surprising grasp of Japanese. Later, the club heads to a shrine in Narita and passes the hours until the first sunrise of the New Year. The episode came packaged with the limited edition of the manga's 15th volume.
