Gintaki Season 4 stops joking around and it breaks you for it. Every character you've laughed with for seasons gets dragged into a war that costs them something real, something irreversible, and the show proves it knows who these people actually are beneath the gags. The comedy doesn't vanish, it just serves the stakes instead of running from them. By the finale, you're not watching a shonen anymore. You're watching people you love choose sides and live with it.

Having sided with the resistance against the bakufu, Gintoki and the Yorozuya are lying low with Katsura and his Joui rebels. Nobume Imai arrives with two Kiheitai members and a request: track down Takasugi, who vanished after a Harusame raid on his ship, now that the pirates have turned on him and on Kamui. Nobume also reveals the Tendoushuu, a hidden group manipulating many factions, led by Utsuro, a man who strongly resembles Gintoki's old teacher. Riding on Sakamoto's ship, the crew heads for Rakuyou, Kagura's home planet, where rival factions are gathering and a major battle is building. The season mixes sci-fi action, comedy and drama.
