Hiro keeps choosing the wrong thing, over and over, and the show never punishes him for it, it just watches him figure out why he meant it. The dialogue does the heavy lifting here; characters reveal themselves through what they don't say, through the small moments where you realize someone's been paying attention to someone else the whole time. It builds a world where baseball is the excuse, but staying matters more than winning.
Hiro loves baseball, but an elbow injury makes him give up the sport, and he picks a school that has no baseball team. His childhood friend Hikari goes to another school, where the baseball ace Hideo plays, and both of them wish Hiro had not quit. At his new school Hiro signs up for soccer and meets Haruka, an extremely clumsy girl whose father is the man Hiro's dad works under. Haruka manages the school's baseball club, which has no official standing. The soccer team, hoping to embarrass the baseball players, challenges them to a game, and the club comes close to defeat. Fed up with the soccer players' arrogance, Hiro switches sides. What follows mixes comedy, romance and baseball.
