The first arc works because Haseo doesn't know what he's looking for either, you're genuinely confused alongside him, pulled into the Twilight Brigade's orbit by the same gravity that pulls him. The pacing kills it for anyone not already committed to the franchise's atmosphere, and the ending never comes, which means you're signing up to watch something deliberately unfinished in a series that already demanded you play the games to understand what was actually happening.

After a fire at CC Corporation wipes out the original online game The World, the company rebuilds it with data from another project and launches The World R:2 in 2016. On his very first day, newcomer Haseo is killed by the players he thought were his new friends, who did it purely for sport. A mysterious one-armed player named Ovan revives him and offers to show him the ropes. Alongside Ovan and a Harvest cleric named Shino, Haseo joins the Twilight Brigade, a guild searching for a fabled item called the Key of the Twilight. The story covers his first year in the game and the friendships he forms there. This adventure and fantasy drama with science fiction elements is set before the .hack//G.U. games.
